Reading Workshop pt 2

This video is  a puppet show that was adapted from the story One Monday Morning . This was their very first performance with Ms. Erin.

session 1: Strategies for sharing and storing .Notebook files  (15 mins) (Rhys)

• naming notebook files (file + Save As), naming conventions (unit name, “template”, or class/year)
• creating a folder for storing all Notebook files
• one strategy: Keep 1 large file of routines like morning meeting, blank charts + sub-unit files (i.e. take today’s resources and save them in one file)
• another strategy: once you develop a file for a unit, save a blank version as a “Template”.  When you’re ready to start
• emailing or passing on a thumb drive back-and-forth between home and school
• DO NOW: start a Charts File

session 2: Charts (10 mins demo (Rosie), 20 mins breakout: in Lopez/Kotas rooms, Rhys and Rosie circulate

• breakout room 1: each group make the 3 charts (Venn, Flowchart, Coordinate Graphs)
• Try screenshots of Eduplace.org’s Graphic Organizers
• breakout room 2: reading workshop grouping .notebook file developed with Ms. Williams & Feliciano

session 3: Games teachers come with favorite games to share (list them on the school website) (30 mins) (Rhys)

• online games/self-contained activities (collections) (storyline.org, starfall, math, graphing…)
• add new games to the school website
• teacher choice: (offer these as options)
• in-room option 1: downloading games – find, download and assess (Rhys)
• in-room option 2: customizing your own game (editing Jeopardy file downloaded from Smart Tech) (Rosie)

session 4: Special Effects Review: Animations (10 mins demo, 20 mins breakout) (Rhys)

(using lessons that teachers here have found and like, we will go through the process of downloading, installing, and adapting existing files)

• Overview of Smart Notebook 10.7 (YOU NEED This for your document camera to work)
• Visit and search Smart Tech Exchange (search: “Smart Exchange”
• Visit and search Tequipment Resources (search: “tequipment resource center”
• Search for bookmark Jeopardy for Day 3 Workshop

session 2: Video ( demos 4-4:20, breakout 4:20-4:40)

• linking a video to a screenshot (i.e. vimeo, teachertube, national geographic)
• visit one of the following Streaming Video Sites: Decorah Eagles Live Webcam,NY Hawk Live Webcam
• Take a Screenshot of one of the birds on the screen
  Screenshot steps: 1) press command + shift + 4 keys, 2) click and drag diagonally across the video window and let go to snap a Screenshot

Insert your screenshot into a Notebook File
Insert an image in Notebook steps: 1) Open a new Notebook file, click “Insert” + “Picture File…” and find the Screenshot image on your desktop and select it (like attaching a picture to an email), 2) click on the screenshot image, click the dropdown menu arrow, and select “Link…”, then copy/paste the address of the video you’re linking to in the “Address” box, 3) click on the globe in the bottom of your screenshot to test the link
[SIDE NOTE: Save your notebook files.  If it is a template, like a chart, keep a blank version.

  (NOTE: Youtube.com will only work at home or by plugging in an ethernet cable from an administrator’s computer – i.e. in room 306) 1) go to a Youtube.com video2) copy the address of the video, 3) go to kissyoutube.com and paste the address into the Download box

• take turns trying all of the above; bring back: problems, questions, and an idea for how to improve or use this in your classroom)
• debrief & prep for next time (4:40-5)

Looking for Videos?

• Teachers’ Domain: Home - Teacher’s Domain is an online library of more than 1,000 free media resources from the best in public television.
  
• TeacherTube.com – Videos posted by teachers for teachers (search it like Youtube)
• National Geographic’s Video Archive
• Also try Google keyword searches, then narrowing the results by clicking “Videos” on the left column
• Videos hosted by Youtube are blocked by the DOE.  However, many other video hosts are not, so try adding the word “video” to your search inquires, and look for non-YouTube results.
• FYI: Youtube Videos can be downloaded from an outside connection, or in the office, then played from your computer in the classroom
