Olympian Derrick Adkins visited our school for a special motivational presentation of “The Olympic Mentality”. Derrick won the Gold Medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in the 400-meter hurdles. He is also an engineering graduate of Georgia Tech.
Students had the opportunity to view Derrick’s winning Olympic race during the presentation. Derrick spoke about perseverance, eating healthy, being positive, and working hard to attain your goals. He stressed schoolwork above all, and striving to “do the best you can do in all you do…you will become great at what you do”. He spoke of his life, using his experiences as examples of perseverance, achieving personal bests, academic success, and healthy eating.
In the Q&A session that followed the presentation, students asked questions about his interest in running, how he started, how he felt before a race, what he studied in school, and how many medals he’s won.
