We understand that Character Day has been a popular day among families and staff in past years. However, we have realized that it also has the potential of excluding certain community members, which is never our intention. There are members of our community who do not celebrate Halloween, and have kept their children home from school in the past on Character Day. We feel that this is not in keeping with our mission as an inclusive community and so ask that children not wear costumes to school in celebration of Halloween. We know that all children who do celebrate Halloween will have the opportunity to wear costumes and trick-or-treat with their families after school (or on Saturday this year). Keeping festivities at school limited to activities centered around the Fall, such as taking neighborhood walks to pick a pumpkin for the classroom, collecting colorful fall leaves, etc., honor all of our traditions.
